The Cleveland Guardians (33-28) have fared well for a team without one of its top pitchers. Although it ranks 19th in baseball with a 3.99 ERA and 24th with a .682 OPS, it still holds the AL's second Wild Card spot and is just a half-game behind the Minnesota Twins for the first one.
However, the Guardians could use Shane Bieber at full strength as soon as possible. The 2020 Cy Young Award-winner only pitched two games last season and has yet to play this year as he works back from Tommy John surgery.
Cleveland received an update about Bieber before its bout with the Houston Astros on Friday, via The Athletic's Zack Meisel.
"Shane Bieber will be shut down from throwing until the middle of next week (one week from when soreness surfaced)," he reported. "He’ll be re-checked at that point to determine his readiness to continue his progression."
The 30-year-old was scheduled for a rehab start in Akron on Friday, but was scratched on Thursday.

Bieber went 2-0 and pitched 12 shutout innings across his two starts last season and went 6-6 with a 3.80 ERA over 21 starts in 2023. The 6-foot-3-inch, 200-pounder also went 13-8 with a 2.88 ERA over 31 starts in 2022.
The Guardians will host the Astros on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before hosting a three-game set with the Cincinnati Reds. After that, they'll hit the road to face the Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, and Athletics before returning home to play the Toronto Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals.
