Here’s Why the Yankees Won’t Hire Álex Rodríguez to Replace Aaron Boone
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Over 20 years ago, the New York Yankees tasked Álex Rodríguez with replacing Aaron Boone, and the prolific slugger eventually helped the Bronx Bombers to a World Series title.

Good luck expecting history to repeat twice.

A segment of social media users continues calling on the Yankees to fire Boone and hire Rodríguez, a three-time AL MVP who spent the back half of his career in New York. Although Rodríguez has never coached, let alone managed, he’s nonetheless quickly become a trendy name amid the Yankees’ disastrous second-half collapse.

Let’s stop Yankees fans in their tracks: there is a better chance that the Yankees retire the pinstripes and move to Siberia than there is that they’d hire Alex Rodríguez to replace Aaron Boone.

First off, there is no indication that the Yankees plan to fire Boone. That could obviously change if they miss the playoffs for the second time in three years, but he appears safe ... for now. As of Aug. 6, there have been no credible reports about the Yankees even considering dismissing Boone midseason.

Secondly, let’s consider the idea of Rodríguez managing the Yankees given his lack of coaching experience. Brian Cashman already tried that with Boone, who owns just a single pennant in eight seasons and is overseeing one of the worst collapses in modern Yankees history.

Rodríguez has enough on his plate as is, between his TV work with FOX and serving as the Minnesota Timberwolves’ alternate owner/governor. Co-owning a basketball team sounds far better to us than managing the Yankees.

For what it’s worth, we doubt that Rodríguez’s 2014 suspension for performance-enhancing drugs would keep the Yankees from hiring him. It says enough that the Yankees even invited Rodríguez to Old Timers’ Day.

We understand that Yankees fans want a new face in the dugout, and they may get their wish within the coming weeks. Just don’t expect to see Rodríguez managing the Yankees next year, not unless he’s planning on live-streaming an “MLB: The Show” franchise.
