Houston Astros Share Brutal Update on Jose Urquidy
Erik Williams-USA TODAY Sports

The 2024 season has been a difficult one for the Houston Astros. They have dealt with underwhelming performances from some key players and injuries. One of the players who is dealing with an injury is starting pitcher Jose Urquidy.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that his absence could last for the entire season. According to Chandler Rome of The Athletic, Joe Urquidy is seeking a second opinion on the injury he is dealing with.

Dr. Keith Meister, a renowned orthopedic surgeon will be meeting with the Houston Astros pitcher. Tommy John surgery is still on the table, as he deals with a forearm strain that popped up near the end of Spring Training.

With two weeks remaining in the exhibition season, Jose Urquidy was shut down. He has not appeared in a major league game, as he and the team have been figuring out the best course of action to take.

As shared by Rome, “He exited a minor-league rehab start on May 24 with what the Astros described as “right forearm discomfort.” Team officials expected that to be Urquidy’s final rehab appearance before rejoining the Astros’ rotation.”

Since that setback nearly two weeks ago, the Houston Astros have issued no official updates. They are keeping everything tight-lipped, as manager Joe Espada declined to comment when asked about Jose Urquidy or Cristian Javier last week. Both are on the injured list with forearm injuries.

If Urquidy has to go under the knife, it will be the second Tommy John surgery of his career. He underwent the procedure in 2017 before he started moving up the Houston Astros’ farm system.

Last season, Jose Urquidy started 10 games for the Astros, making 16 appearances overall. He went 3-3 registering a career-worst 5.29 ERA in 63 innings pitched.

In 10 innings over three postseason appearances, he surrendered six earned runs. He did have a solid start against the Minnesota Twins in the ALDS, pitching 5.2 innings and giving up only two runs on three hits and one walk with six strikeouts.
