You’ve got to be kidding me. Just when the Houston Astros thought their pitching rotation was finally getting its act together, the injury bug bites again, and this time it’s a gut punch. Luis Garcia, fresh off a two-year hiatus and a grueling Tommy John surgery recovery, is heading back to the 15-day injured list. The official word is “right elbow discomfort,” but for Astros fans, it feels a lot more like “here we go again.” How long will he be sidelined?
It was a storybook return for Garcia on September 1. After more than two years away from the mound, he looked sharp against the Angels, pitching six strong innings for the win. Control, which is usually the last thing to come back after Tommy John, was impeccable—zero walks. It felt like Houston had its guy back, a much-needed reinforcement for the final stretch.
Then came Tuesday’s game in Toronto. It all went south in the second inning. After a pitch to Ernie Clement, Garcia immediately signaled to the dugout. You could see it on his face; something wasn’t right. After a quick chat with the trainers, he was walking off the field, and a collective groan could be heard from Houston all the way to Canada.
Let’s be real, this is a crushing blow. Manager Joe Espada looked heartbroken, telling reporters it felt like watching his own son go through it. “He works extremely hard,” Espada said, capturing the sheer unfairness of the situation. Garcia is now back in Houston for more tests, and the entire organization is holding its breath.
With just a couple of weeks left in the regular season, his return seems highly unlikely. The Astros, who have been playing musical chairs with their rotation all year, lose a key piece they were banking on for the playoff push. While Nick Hernandez gets the call-up from Triple-A, you can’t just replace a talent like Garcia. For now, all we can do is hope the tests bring some good news. But after a two-year journey just to get back on the mound, this setback for Garcia feels particularly cruel.
