How Successful Were the Angels at the Trade Deadline?

O’Hoppe 2026 Season Breakdown

In 75 games this season for the Angels, O’Hoppe hit .209. His slugging percentage sat at .295 with 63 strikeouts. 2026 has been disappointing so far for O’Hoppe, not only offensively but defensively. He’s had five errors and has allowed 50 stolen bases while only catching 14. 

While O’Hoppe has been a fan favorite among Halo fans, the trade made sense. The 26-year-old just hasn’t been doing it for the Angels behind the plate. And with the addition of Tyler Heineman earlier this season and Travis D’Arnaud returning from the injured list, there was no room left for O’Hoppe.

Silseth 2026 Season Breakdown

While the O’Hoppe aspect of the trade made sense, including right-handed pitcher Chase Silseth in the deal was a surprise.

Silseth leads the team in game appearances, pitching in 47 games with 48 strikeouts in 39.2 innings pitched. With the way the Halos’ bullpen has been struggling this year, Silseth was one of the few bright spots. 

Beyond that, the 26-year-old has been with the Angels since 2022 and has been a great addition for the team not only as a relief pitcher but as a starter as well. The fact that the Angels traded not only O’Hoppe but Silseth as well could give fans a better idea of their trade deadline plans.

Jose Soriano Trade

There have been rumors speculating all season about who the Halos will trade. GM John Mozeliak said they’re “staying very open-minded in this process.” 

Jose Soriano was sent to the Blue Jays in exchange for shortstop Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Micheletti and right-handed pitcher Angel Rivero. Soriano started 2026 on a historical note, becoming the first MLB starter since 1900 to allow one or fewer runs through six starts. 

There had been rumors that the Angels were going to trade Soriano throughout the year, and after the news broke that the Blue Jays were sending Kevin Gausman to Chicago, it was no surprise when they went after Soriano. 

Nimmala is currently the No. 27 overall prospect. He was drafted in 2023 by the Blue Jays straight out of high school. Nimmala has solid contact and power at the plate, along with good speed on the bases. He’ll certainly become one of the Angels’ best prospects in the organization. 

Micheletti has spent his 2026 campaign in Double-A, hitting .251 with 14 home runs. Rivero has pitched 113 innings as a starter in the Florida Complex League with a 3.66 ERA. Both young prospects can be future stars for the ball club.

Jo Adell Trade

Jo Adell was sent to the Cleveland Guardians in a one-for-one trade, with the Angels receiving catcher Jacob Cozart in return. 

Adell had an OPS of .682 in 111 games with the Halos this season, hitting 16 home runs and 62 RBIs. The Guardians get the power-hitting outfielder they’ve been searching for, while the Angels get back a promising catching prospect with elite defense. 

Taking into consideration how well the Guardians are at developing their prospects, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Cozart bring a new level to the Angels organization. His defensive capabilities set him apart from the rest, but his offense isn’t that far behind. He’s hit .240 this year with 10 home runs. That alone would be a step-up from what the Halos had been seeing from O’Hoppe this year.

Brent Suter Trade

It’s become a staple in recent years that the Angels will make some kind of deal with the Atlanta Braves. This year it happens to be the Halos sending left-handed pitcher Brent Suter to Atlanta in exchange for third baseman Nacho Alvarez Jr. 

Suter was a likely trade candidate not only due to his cheap one-year contract but also for his 4.12 ERA in 63.1 Innings pitched in 41 games. 

While Alvarez Jr. has already been placed on the IL in the minors, if healthy, he could be a top performer. Alvarez Jr. has spent some time in both the minors and majors. He’s primarily spent that time at third base because of his defensive capabilities. With him also seeing some time at second base and good power at the plate, Halo fans can expect to see him in the majors in the coming years.

Ryan Zeferjahn Trade

Another very complete deal for both sides. Ryan Zeferjahn, after posting a 3.71 ERA in 45 games, was traded to the Chicago Cubs. Zeferjahn’s name appeared in several trade rumours over the season on account of his elite swing-and-miss pitches. 

In return, the Halos received catcher/designated hitter Moises Ballesteros and right-handed pitcher Mason McGuire. With the hole left behind by O’Hoppe, Ballesteros is expected to fill that spot. Ballesteros was one of the Cubs’ top prospects in 2025. He hit .246 with a .723 OPS in two seasons with them. He’s still developing on both defensive and offensive ends. But being surrounded by two veteran catchers, Travis D’Arnaud and Tyler Heineman, he’ll most likely sharpen those skills.

22-year-old Mason McGwire also came with Ballesteros in the trade. The son of Mark McGwire was drafted out of high school in 2022 in the 11th round by the Cubs. He’s posted a 3.64 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 18 games between single-A and high-A ball. The Angels could always use more pitching and young promising prospects. 

Kirby Yates Trade

Among all the trades, it seemed unlikely that Kirby Yates would be moved at the deadline, as he’s had a rough 2026 campaign. After posting a 3.95 ERA and blowing three of six save opportunities, Yates was traded to the Pirates. 

It was a last-minute trade from the Halos to wrap up the 2026 trade deadline. But the Halos did receive back a 23-year-old right-handed pitcher, Kyle Robinson. The young pitcher was drafted in 2024 by the Athletics and then was traded to Pittsburgh at the beginning of the 2026 season. Robinson has spent more of his career as a starter, with a 4.55 ERA and 1.43 WHIP this season. 

While Robinson may not be the more promising prospect of the deadline, it’s a fair swap for a pitcher like Kirby Yates.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Angels had a surprising and successful trade deadline. With many expecting the team to be quiet again this year, these six moves are something to celebrate. Going into this deadline, interim GM John Mozeliak did state that he wanted to focus on building/helping the farm system. And with all the new prospect additions, that focus is working. 

It will be interesting to see going forward when and who will be brought up to the majors, and whether or not these trades will pan out to be successful.
