Hunter Greene is expected to come off the injured list on Friday to open the series against the National League Central Division-leading Chicago Cubs on Friday.
Greene left the mound on May 7 after feeling a tight right groin while warming up for the fourth inning in Atlanta.
Chase Petty, who replaced him in the starting rotation, was sent back to the Louisville Bats on Wednesday morning as the Reds reinstated Ian Gibaut from the injured list. They also removed lefty Sam Moll from the IL and optioned him to Louisville.
Another reliever will be sent down on Friday to make room for Greene.
When Greene left the game in Atlanta, he had thrown three scoreless innings in which he struck out six Braves batters.
Greene is 4-2 on the season and off to the best season start in his career. His earned run average is 2.36, He struck out 61 batters in 45 ⅔ innings with just eight walks and a WHIP of 0.810. Greene would be third in MLB in WHIP if he had enough innings to qualify. He is second to MacKenzie Gore with 12 strikeouts per nine innings.
Wade Miley was given credit for a complete game shutout against Gwinnett on Tuesday, with five innings in which he allowed two hits and a walk. He struck out two.
Miley is recovering from surgery on his left elbow. He last pitched in a big league game on April 16, 2024.
Chase Burns improved to 3-1 in his professional career after allowing just one run on two hits across 5.0 innings (1bb, 7k, 1hr) in AA-Chattanooga’s 7-1, rain-shortened win vs Rocket City. Burns carried a no-hit bid into the 5th inning before allowing a solo homer to lead off the frame to David Calabrese. Burns ranks eighth among all full-season minor leaguers with 55 strikeouts.
Rhett Lowder didn’t make it out of the first inning in his start Saturday at Louisville, giving up four runs in ⅓ innings. He is returning from a strained left elbow.
