The Los Angeles Dodgers could be searching for outfield help this summer, even after slugger Teoscar Hernández returns from the groin strain that landed him on the injured list earlier this month.
Andy Pages is enjoying a breakout season offensively and has seemingly secured his spot in the everyday lineup, and Hernández will once again be a major presence in the middle of the lineup once he returns to action, but third spot in the grass remains a question mark.
Veteran Michael Conforto was signed to a one-year, $17 million deal during the offseason to at least serve as a strong-side platoon option, but he is hitting a paltry .172/.303/.287 for a 71 OPS+ over his first 145 plate appearances as one of the least productive hitters in baseball.
Chris Taylor (7-for-32, two XBH, 13 K) and recently promoted James Outman (2-for-17, one XBH, 10 K) have similarly struggled, creating a major offensive void at the bottom of the lineup.
There are some in-house options to consider, including speedy Esteury Ruiz on the 40-man roster and top prospect Dalton Rushing, who saw significant action in left field during the second half last year, aside from his work behind the plate.
However, if it reaches the point where an outside addition is viewed as a necessity, expect the Dodgers to swing for the fences as they continue to operate in "win-now" mode while chasing another World Series title.
Meanwhile, if the Baltimore Orioles continue to struggle, Cedric Mullins could end up being one of the biggest names on the block at the trade deadline, and he could be the perfect rental for the Dodgers to shore up their outfield contingent.
The All-Star center fielder will be a free agent at season's end, and with a potential future outfield of Colton Cowser, Heston Kjerstad, and Tyler O'Neill, flipping him for prospects this summer makes sense if the Orioles do not intend to sign him to a long-term deal.
