Insider Reveals Where Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer Stand for Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have to be thrilled with Kristian Campbell’s development. A recent top prospect, Campbell has jumped into the fire and performed admirably at second base, with a .264 batting average, a .774 OPS, and a 117 OPS+ through his first 129 Big League at-bats.

However, despite Campbell’s ascension and eight-year, $60 million extension, he is not the only youngster who should excite Boston fans.

Much of the recent praise has gone to No. 1 prospect Roman Anthony, and rightfully so, as he is tearing the cover off the ball for Triple-A Worcester. But, according to one scout, it may be his teammate and No. 2-ranked Marcelo Mayer who deserves the flowers.

The scout with close eyes on Worcester had this to say, via WEEI:

“(Marcelo) Mayer has looked better lately than (Roman) Anthony. He is turning around 97 mph fastballs like they’re nothing. He’s ready now.”

Mayer’s stats certainly support the argument. He is batting a fine .269, but has an .811 OPS with seven home runs and 35 RBIs through 34 games for Worcester and has been a fixture in the middle of the infield. He is a natural shortstop and is likely the heir apparent to Trevor Story at the six.

Mayer has also seen time at both second base and third base and could provide manager Alex Cora with lineup versatility later this summer.

The Red Sox want Mayer to play regularly wherever he is, and calling him up now, while Story is still healthy and there are no more defensive spots for him, does not make sense.

Perhaps they can teach him first base and resolve some of the Triston Casas loss/Rafael Devers drama. In the meantime, watch for Mayer to continue his hot start in Worcester, and in all likelihood, he will get the call-up sometime this season.
