Is Justin Turner a Short-Term Fit for the Cubs?
Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs have questions regarding their third baseman situation as the 2024 season approaches.

Their current internal options include the likes of Michael Busch, Nick Madrigal, and Christopher Morel. Externally, Matt Chapman, a two-time Platinum Glove winner at the hot corner, has been rumored as a possibility.

That list may be expanding, as MLB Network's John Morosi reports that two-time All-Star and current free agent Justin Turner is “likely” to make his signing this week, and the Cubs could be in play.

Justin Turner to the Cubs?

In 146 games with the Boston Red Sox last season, Turner proved he still swings a quality bat, even at 38 years old. In just over 600 plate appearances, the righty slashed .276/.345/.455 with 23 home runs, 31 doubles, and 96 RBIs. He also placed in the top 80th percentile in batting run value and the top 90th percentile in whiff percentage.

For his career, Turner has mostly been an above-average player. Across 15 seasons, the California native has averaged 20 home runs, 34 doubles, 80 RBIs, a .288 batting average, and an .829 OPS per season.

But at 39 years old, does he fit with the Cubs in 2024?

On one hand, his quality offensive season in 2023 proves he still has some gas left in the tank. Along with corner infield versatility and DH capabilities, perhaps he could provide a veteran presence in the Cubs’ clubhouse.

But does it make sense for Jed Hoyer to sign a near-40-year-old who may or not play most of the season because of the high potential of injury at his age? After all, he only played 58 games in the field last season (seven at third, 41 at first, and 10 at second). And if he joined the North Siders, would it usurp playing time from youngsters such as Busch and Morel?

If I were in Hoyer's position, I'd pass on this one. Turner could prove to be a quality hitter for a team looking for a DH/corner infielder, but I don’t think it’s worth it for the Cubs to risk a contract on the veteran, especially if Busch and Morel are expected to be key contributors in 2024.
