Is Shohei Ohtani on pace for another historic feat?

Shohei Ohtani seems to astonish us all daily, but he may be on pace for arguably his most significant feat to date.

Entering play Saturday, the Los Angeles Angels two-way phenom led two of three Triple Crown categories. Through 82 games, Ohtani ranks tops in the American League in home runs (30) and RBIs (67). The 28-year-old is fourth in batting average (.310) but he's creeping up the leaderboard, trailing only seven points behind the leader, Toronto Blue Jays' Bo Bichette (.317).

Ohtani hasn't been known for sporting the highest batting average as a career .273 hitter. But, as Ohtani has proven time and time again, he's capable of virtually anything. And, so far, Ohtani is shattering his career-best (.286), so why not aim for the league lead?

While Ohtani's average could be higher, he'll also have to stay consistent in smashing long balls and driving in runs if he hopes to make history. Ohtani owns a modest six-RBI advantage over Chicago White Sox's Luis Robert Jr. (24) but has only a small cushion in the home run race, leading Texas Rangers' Adolis Garcia (66) by one.

There hasn't been a Triple Crown winner in baseball in over a decade when Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera accomplished the feat in 2012. Though, if there's anyone seemingly capable of breaking that streak, it's Ohtani, and the 28-year-old has been on a tear lately. Ahead of the Angels' matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday, Ohtani was riding an eight-game hit streak, going 15-of-32 with six home runs and nine RBIs over that stretch.

Health and luck will play a factor, sure. But, as the All-Star break approaches, Ohtani has a real shot, and that should make watching him the rest of the season even more enjoyable if that's possible.
