It would be a shock if the Braves retain Dansby Swanson
Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

I’ve said for years that Dansby Swanson should be a Brave for life, and he proved me right with a career-year in 2022. Unfortunately, that All-Star campaign might have priced himself out of Atlanta.

The market is absolutely insane at every position. We’ve seen star pitchers command $40 million a year, and average pitchers fetch $20 million per season. Trea Turner set the bar for the shortstop market at $300 million over 11 seasons, but it wasn’t until tonight that I realized Dansby Swanson will no longer be a member of the Atlanta Braves.

According to Jon Heyman, Xander Bogaerts has inked an 11-year, $280 million contract with the San Diego Padres.

Xander Bogaerts is a fantastic player. I even think he is better all-around than Dansby Swanson, but that really doesn’t matter. If Bogaerts is getting close to $300 million, the Braves aren’t even going to be close to what other teams are offering Dansby Swanson.

Atlanta reportedly declined a counteroffer from Swanson that was worth $140 million. If the Braves aren’t even willing to go that high, there’s next to no chance they retain their All-Star shortstop.
