The Milwaukee Brewers rebounded from their sweep at the hands of the Texas Rangers by taking the series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals. On Saturday, they turned to Jacob Misiorowski on the mound. Although the rookie sensation gave up an early lead to St. Louis, he managed to limit the damage and keep Milwaukee in the game.

With a runner aboard, Victor Scott II crushed a 97 mph four-seamer from Misiorowski toward right center, a shot that seemed certain to split the gap. But Jackson Chourio sprinted it down and snatched it for a spectacular catch.

Jackson Chourio exploded off the bat with a quick first step, covering a huge stretch of ground before laying out for a diving grab. The play denied Scott extra bases and an RBI, helping the Brewers escape the inning trailing just 3-1 and giving Misiorowski a sigh of relief.

Chourio couldn’t stop the Cardinals from adding another run in the fifth. Misiorowski ended his outing with four runs allowed on seven hits and one walk while striking out four across five innings.

Even with Chourio’s captivating catch, the Brewers struggled defensively. Caleb Durbin and Joey Ortiz each committed throwing errors, giving Milwaukee two costly mistakes in the field.

Jackson Chourio and the Brewers comeback

The Cardinals stretched their lead to 6-2 in the sixth inning. Chourio’s catch did not change the outcome, but it still gave the Brewers an encouraging highlight to build on.

The 21-year-old outfielder is delivering an impressive second season and has clearly shaken off the hamstring strain he picked up in July. Chourio returned to action on August 30 after sitting out 30 games, the result of an injury he suffered while sprinting the bases against the Chicago Cubs on July 29.

The Brewers have cooled off from their blistering midseason run. Even so, Milwaukee came into Saturday holding the best record in baseball. They also became the first team to secure a playoff spot and currently sit six games ahead of the Cubs in the NL Central.

The Cardinals have no chance of chasing down the Brewers in the division, but they remain alive in the postseason race. St. Louis started the day 3.5 games back of the final Wild Card spot, though they still need to jump past four teams to claim a playoff berth.
