There were a ton of big moments for the Arizona Diamondbacks in yesterday’s 9-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Though one of them stood out for the Snakes, as Jake McCarthy got his first hit of the 2025 season after starting 0-24 at the plate.

It was a Diamondbacks record that was broken, when McCarthy went 0-23 yesterday to start the game. As he went 0-24, it is now the new D-Backs record at the plate to begin a season. Baseball is full of ebbs and flows, and going into the fifth inning, McCarthy came up to the plate and delivered. McCarthy smashed one into left-center, getting a double and ended up scoring a run as well for the Snakes. Starting in left field for Lourdes Gurriel Jr., McCarthy went 1-4 on the day.

Jake McCarthy was vocal about his struggles:

“I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t frustrating,” McCarthy said. “I think you always want to get off to a good start. I think some of my at-bats have come up in crucial parts of the game, and I haven’t come through, and that’s always going to be frustrating for me, especially when I think I could have made a difference in the outcome of the game.”

Jake McCarthy this season has been in contention with Alek Thomas for the center field position dating back to spring training. In 26 at bats, Thomas is batting .308 while McCarthy is now at a .038 batting average. Can McCarthy capitalize on his double yesterday going forward for the Snakes? Only time will tell. Arizona has another home series this weekend as the Milwaukee Brewers will be in town, which will be McCarthy’s next chance to get back on track.
