Jarren Duran has become a star for the Boston Red Sox over the last few seasons. But his road to getting there was far from smooth.

On Tuesday, Netflix released the documentary series “The Clubhouse.” The eight-part series gave Red Sox fans an up close and personal look into the lives of the team’s players, including Duran.

In the series’ fourth episode, titled “Still Alive,” Duran shared details about his suicide attempt in 2022. The 28-year-old revealed how his struggles on the field had exacerbated his mental health issues outside the confines of Fenway Park.

“I was already hearing it from fans,” Duran said on the Netflix show, via MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “And what they said to me, I’ve told myself 10 times worse in the mirror. That was a really tough time for me. I didn’t even want to be here anymore.”

It got to the point where Duran held a loaded rifle in his room one night in 2022. He “pulled the trigger” on himself, but claimed the gun did not fire. Duran considered the gun misfiring as some form of divine intervention.

On Tuesday, Duran spoke to reporters about his decision to talk about his suicide attempt on a mainstream platform like Netflix. The Red Sox star stated that his message was meant to help anyone struggling with similar thoughts.

“I mean, the whole purpose of me sharing is just kind of to get it out there and let people know that they’re not alone,” said Duran. “Even if I could just help one person, it’s meaningful. So I’m just trying to let people know that there’s always help and to make sure that they’re reaching out.”

Suicide prevention group “Samaritans” reportedly received triple the calls that they usually do on the night the Netflix series debuted.

Duran had a breakout campaign for the Red Sox last season. The 6’1″ slugger batted .285 with 21 home runs, 75 RBIs, and an OPS of .834. He finished eighth in AL MVP voting, even ahead of superstar teammate Rafael Devers.
