The expectations entering the 2025 season weren't all too high for the Boston Red Sox, but they've certainly impressed, sporting a 64-51 record, which puts them in second place in the AL East behind the Toronto Blue Jays.
They've been able to perform well due to several young players stepping up, including rookie right fielder Roman Anthony. Before the team's Wednesday game against the Kansas City Royals, he'd already accumulated 159 at-bats, 45 hits, 27 runs scored, two home runs, 19 RBIs and a .828 OPS.
His efforts have gone far from unnoticed, because on Wednesday, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Red Sox signed him to an eight-year, $130 million extension that will run through the 2034 season.
It's an exciting development, as the Red Sox hope they've found their next franchise superstar, and it even drew a reaction from one of Anthony's fellow outfielders in Boston, Jarren Duran.
Quickly after the news broke, Durran went to his Instagram Story to repost a graphic with the details, while also writing "Lets Go!!!!!!"
Down the line, this deal could also be viewed as a very smart investment, because if Anthony can continue at this pace, with ESPN BET even giving him the second-best odds (+2000) to win AL Rookie of the Year, then the Red Sox may have gotten a steal.
Before the trade deadline officially passed on July 31, Duran was viewed as a serious trade candidate, with ESPN's Passan and Kiley McDaniel giving the Red Sox a 25% chance to move on from the outfielder.
However, he stayed put, but his future with the team is still a huge question mark, considering that even if the team picks up the $8 million club option, 2026 is the final year he's under contract.
It would need to be a pretty big investment for Boston if they want to keep him around, with Spotrac predicting that his market value could fetch the 28-year-old and one-time All-Star a six-year, $123 million deal.
Obviously, Duran is excited to see Anthony get his own payday, but if the Red Sox don't start acting quickly, then the two won't be roaming the outfield at Fenway Park together for much longer.
