Jazz Chisholm Jr. didn’t need words to make his point Wednesday night. His bat did the talking.
One night after his controversial ejection in the ninth inning, Chisholm launched a two-run homer in the third inning, launching the Yankees to a 7–1 win over the Reds at Great American Ball Park.
As he rounded third, Chisholm seemed to hesitate slightly and motioned at umpire Mark Wegner, who had tossed him the night before. Then, when he crossed home plate, Chisholm added his usual Eurostep and appeared to exchange a remark with Reds catcher Jose Trevino, who smiled from behind his mask.
The moment followed a quiet off-day firestorm behind the scenes.
After Tuesday night’s ejection, the Yankees reviewed video of the incident in their clubhouse. Manager Aaron Boone told reporters pregame Wednesday that they had taken a closer look and saw something unexpected: Trevino, Chisholm’s former teammate, egging on Wegner to look toward third base shortly before the ejection.
On the YES Network broadcast, Michael Kay said that he knew Boone and the Yankees were “not happy,” with Trevino on Wednesday.
Chisholm had struck out in the top of the ninth on Tuesday and voiced frustration about the low strike call. He jawed on his way back to the dugout and in the dugout. Yankees captain Aaron Judge tried to calm him down before he went back out to third, but he was tossed moments later after returning to third base.
At the time, the sequence raised questions among teammates and coaches about what exactly had prompted Wegner’s decision.
On Wednesday, Chisholm delivered his own rebuttal.
His third-inning blast off Brady Singer cleared the fence in a hurry, and his trip around the bases carried an extra layer of satisfaction. While it’s unclear what was said at home plate, the exchange was light enough that Trevino appeared to take it in stride.
Just two nights earlier, Boone had presented Trevino with his 2024 AL championship ring in a brief pregame moment.Trevino trolled Judge and Carlos Rodon on the first two nights. After the ejection, however, Wednesday was about Chisholm and the Yankees getting their revenge.
