Just Don’t Call Him Shoeless Jazz Chisholm, Jr.
The New York Yankees’ second baseman lost both his cleats in Sunday’s 4–2 win over the Orioles, but that didn’t stop him from scoring their first run of the day shoeless.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. came barreling home from second on a DJ LeMahieu smoked line drive to left. Because of the heat and humidity engulfing the Bronx on Sunday, Chisholm said that he lost his first shoe on the turn at third heading home.
And then he collided with catcher Maverick Handley up the line and Chisholm’s other shoe went flying.
“I’ve never had someone knock my shoes off,” Chisholm said. “I watched it a couple of times, and I still can’t believe it.”
He went to the dugout in his socks and then changed them out.
“Is that how Shoeless Joe got his name?” he asked reporters. “He ran out of shoes? It was the 1910s, right? So he wasn’t even wearing shoes.”
Chisholm stayed in the game after changing his socks and getting some surprising help from a teammate.
“I put on the same cleats,” he said. “Jasson [Dominguez] tied my shoes. They say he’s the best shoe tier. I didn’t believe it until he did it. Took me like a minute just to get mine off.”
The moment was strange, but Chisholm’s production was familiar. He went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Since returning from an oblique strain that cost him 27 games, he’s hitting .350 (21-for-60) with three home runs, 21 RBI, eight walks, and four stolen bases in 17 games.
He’s changed the pace of the Yankees’ lineup, brought pressure back to the basepaths, and delivered real impact in the middle of the order.
Shoes or no shoes, Chisholm keeps finding ways to score
