Jed Hoyer has one job during the remainder of the season, and that's keeping Kyle Tucker around on a long-term extension. Even if the Chicago Cubs don't win a World Series, which it looks like they could be in a position to do given how they've played in the early parts of the campaign with the toughest schedule in Major League Baseball, Tucker has to be the priority.
Whether that means the team doesn't trade for an expensive player at the deadline remains to be seen, but losing Tucker in the offseason for nothing would be a disaster.
However, when speaking with “670 The Score,” Hoyer said that while he’d love to keep Tucker long-term, he added that it's tough to negotiate in season, something no Cubs fan wants to hear right now.
While Hoyer has a point, as it isn’t easy to negotiate during the middle of the campaign, and Tucker doesn't necessarily have a reason to take a deal with the Cubs unless they're willing to give him a massive contract, it isn't time for any excuses. Find a way to get a deal done and make this fan base happy to have a star in town for the next decade or more.
“If we do have those conversations, we’ll keep them internal. But like I said, he’s really fun to watch. I think he has a huge impact on our entire team, on our entire offense. He’s a player that any team would want to have in the lineup.”
