The Chicago Cubs have a big decision coming at the end of the season. After trading for outfielder Kyle Tucker this offseason, the star is a free agent at the end of the year. Tucker has been outstanding for the Cubs in 2025, but will they pay the price to keep him for the future?
ESPN's Jeff Passan joined 670 The Score Thursday morning and talked about Tucker's free agency and his future with the Cubs.
Co-host Danny Parkins asked Passan what Tucker's price tag will be when he hits the open market, and whether the Cubs are the favorite to land him.
"I think the over under is $450 million," Passan said.
Passan followed that with a simple yes, that the Cubs will be the favorite to get Tucker. There's been a lot of back and forth throughout the season of whether to believe the Cubs will be willing to pay the price for Tucker, or if they'll get out-bid. But, for now, Passan believes the Cubs are the favorites.
"They see what he's done, but I'll tell you what guys, Owen Caissie is still sitting at Triple-A right now," Passan said. "And he would look pretty good in right field."
That's when Parkins chimed in that Cubs' president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said earlier that "there's no reason we can't have both, Owen Caissie and Kyle Tucker."
The problem is, the Cubs have too many outfielders right now. It's a good problem to have; however, it was a large reason many believed the Cubs' trade deadline moves would reveal their positioning on both Tucker and Caissie.
The Cubs have Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Kyle Tucker, and the rising Caissie. Chicago has five outfielders for only three positions.
"I think that's why Cubs fans are disappointed. It felt like there was room to deal from a surplus to go win this World Series," Passan said. "If the Cubs and the Red Sox similarly, can be accused of anything, it's being a little too conservative at this deadline. But man, paying prices at the deadline, it's a really hard thing for teams that try to make good decisions to do because deadlines are irrational, and they create irrational behavior."
For all of this to make sense, the only way at least for me, is to just pay Kyle Tucker this winter. Once that is done they at least have him and PCA for multiple years with young talent they probably want here and plenty of assets on the major league and minors roster to move.…

If the Cubs traded Caissie for starting pitching at the deadline, it looked more promising that they'd bid heavily to keep Tucker. But if they didn't trade Cassie, which is what happened, then does that mean Caissie is the future right fielder?
Passan doesn't believe so. He thinks the Cubs could look to keep Tucker and have both guys playing. Regardless, the Cubs have the All-Star right fielder for this season, and they're hoping to make a World Series run. With four additions at the trade deadline, the Cubs did improve the weaknesses on their roster.
We'll see if it was enough to get them back to the World Series for the first time since 2016. Then, this offseason, they have an expensive decision to make regarding Tucker.
