Jesus Sanchez's future with Blue Jays in doubt

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired Jesus Sanchez in the offseason to replace Anthony Santander, who is sidelined long-term due to injury, but his future with the team remains questionable.

While Sanchez has provided reliable offense and shown flashes of power (eight home runs), the Blue Jays will have both Addison Barger and Santander back next season. Since there will be a logjam in the outfield, there likely won't be a roster spot for Sanchez.

He's also been a below-average outfielder this season, and while he's only committed two errors, his most recent error was costly. On Aug. 7 against the Philadelphia Phillies, he misplayed a ground ball that went past him, allowing Brandon Marsh to score.

Nathan Lukes and Myles Straw have been two of the top defensive outfielders this season, and the Blue Jays also have newly acquired youngster Brett Bateman, who could potentially develop as their future center fielder.

Factors that could determine Jesús Sánchez's future with Blue Jays

Sánchez will be a free agent in 2028. But considering he remains under club control through the 2027 season, he could be a valuable trade chip.

The Blue Jays have other options who also provide power such as Davis Schneider, Yohendrick Pinango and Jonatan Clase. Clase possesses elite speed, which is something that Sánchez lacks in the outfield and on the basepaths.

Schneider has also proved to be a solid defender who has made several spectacular leaping grabs. In addition, Josh Smith provides roster flexibility as he is a utility player who can play both infield and outfield, and has already made an immediate impact with his bat.

Overall, Sánchez doesn't fit on a crowded roster. The Blue Jays don't need to keep his bat in the lineup as they focus on developing their young talent for the future.
