Joe Girardi wasn’t second-guessing his successor on Friday night; he was forecasting.
During Friday night’s YES broadcast, the former New York Yankees manager laid out exactly what the situation was for Luke Weaver before it unfolded in front of him, exactly as he called it.
Weaver, coming back from a stint on the injured list, made his first appearance in a high-leverage situation.
“When a guy doesn’t pitch for 17 days,” Girardi said, according to Awful Announcing, “you preferably try to give him a little bit of a softer landing. But you can’t afford to because of the score of the game tonight.”
Moments later, Ramon Urias hit the tie-breaking home run leading off the top of the eighth to give Baltimore a 4-3 lead
It was a brutal moment, highlighted by how accurately Girardi called it.
Weaver was activated earlier in the day and thrown straight into a tight spot, with the Yankees tied with Baltimore and looking for a scoreless frame. There had been a lot of debate about how to use him when he returned.
Instead, the Orioles took the lead and never looked back.
Weaver, clearly rusty, didn’t have much room for error. And that’s exactly what Girardi was talking about.
Girardi certainly knows the feeling Boone had.
He managed the Yankees from 2008 to 2017, through one of the team's most transitional and pressure-packed eras. In his first season, he replaced the legendary Joe Torre and quickly delivered results, leading the Yankees to their 27th World Series title in 2009. Girardi finished his Yankees tenure with a 910–710 record, six postseason appearances, and a reputation for intense preparation and tactical discipline. His tenure saw the end of the Core Four era, the rise of Aaron Judge's generation, and several deep playoff runs, including a Game 7 ALCS loss in 2017 that ultimately marked his final season.
Girardi, who’s been through all of it, said what fans were thinking, right before it became reality.
