Jordan Leasure, Michael Kopech Help White Sox Hold Off Guardians in Series Opener

The Chicago White Sox won their second straight game by taking Thursday's series opener against the Cleveland Guardians. Erick Fedde tossed six scoreless innings, the Sox offense struck in the first two innings, and most of the relief crew came up clutch to secure a 3-2 victory.

Set the Tone

Tommy Pham got the party started with a leadoff double and scored in the top of the first when Andrew Vaughn doubled him home.

Hot-hitting prospect Bryan Ramos doubled to begin the bottom of the second and scored on Paul DeJong's single. The veteran shortstop stole second base two batters later before Pham roped an RBI single to left field, extending the White Sox' lead to three.

Ready for Fedde

That was the extent of the South Siders' scoring, but it proved to be enough behind another solid outing from Fedde. The right-hander allowed six hits but no damage and no walks while striking out three through his six-plus innings.

Sox manager Pedro Grifol sent Fedde back out for the top of the seventh, but Cleveland strung together three hits and ended the veteran's night.

Bullpen Bent but Didn't Break

In perhaps the White Sox' best individual bullpen showing of the season, rookie Jordan Leasure escaped the dangerous bases-loaded, no-out jam by inducing two strikeouts and a groundout.

"He has electric stuff, so when he puts it on display it's great. My ERA thanks him greatly," Fedde quipped while praising Leasure's performance.

But as is common in this AL Central rivalry, Jose Ramirez and Josh Naylor made things interesting with back-to-back solo homers with two outs in the top of the eighth. Naylor's blast chased John Brebbia from the game, and the White Sox called upon Michael Kopech to record a four-out save.

Kopech allowed a one-out single to Bo Naylor in the top of the ninth but punched out Estevan Florial and induced Kyle Manzardo to ground into a force out to lock down a White Sox win.

News and Notes

The White Sox are 7-6 in their last 13 games, a stretch that began when Tommy Pham joined the roster. The veteran outfielder has provided a much-needed offensive spark with three doubles, two homers, and seven RBIs in that stretch.

Bryan Ramos collected two hits, extending an excellent start to his MLB career. The 22-year-old is 7-for-18 with two doubles, two RBIs, and just one strikeout through his first six games of big-league action.

Luis Robert Jr. is 5-7 days away from playing in backfield games as he recovers from a right hip flexor strain.
