Jordan Montgomery: I think we are finally getting in the right direction
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Jordan Montgomery tossed six quality innings, allowing just two earned runs against the Miami Marlins on Saturday night, leading the Diamondbacks to a 3-2 win.

Out of his seven starts this season, since starting year down in Triple-A, Montgomery has lasted at least six innings five times.

The D-backs hold a 5-2 record in games which Montgomery started on the mound.

Speaking about his recent outing against the Marlins, more particularly getting back into rhythm following his one-month absence from the Diamondbacks to begin the season, Montgomery noted, “I mean, I am gonna go out there and compete every time I get the ball. But, I mean sometimes you try to overthrow and that defeats the purpose, or you rotate too much and you’re never in a good spot to throw the ball where you want. So, I think we finally kinda getting in the right direction.”

Montgomery started the season in triple-A since he did not sign with the Diamondbacks until late March, causing him to miss the entirety of spring training. The big lefty agreed to terms on a one-year, $25 million deal with Arizona that includes a vesting player option for 2025.

Working particularly well for Montgomery on Saturday was his curveball, at least until the 6th inning. Up until this final inning on the mound, none of his seven hits allowed were off the curve. Montgomery noted, ” I’m just getting more out front, I can spin it, velo is where it needs to be. Usually when it’s 79-81, its sharp and right where it needs to be.”

The Marlins finally broke through on Montgomery’s curve with a couple of base knocks in the 6th inning, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. driving in a run on a 78 MPH curveball.

The Diamondbacks will wrap up their three-game series against Miami on Sunday at 1:10 pm, Arizona has not announced a starter for this game yet.
