Pitcher Jovani Moran is being called up to the big leagues as a flurry of Boston Red Sox roster moves was made today. Moran was pitching at AAA Worcester, where he put up some solid numbers. In 26 total innings this season, Martin has a 1-4 record with a 3.81 ERA. He has split time between the Florida Coast League, A+, and now AAA. He looks like he could be a nice depth piece for the Red Sox pitching. The 28-year-old will have his shot at joining a contending team in Boston.

Other Boston Red Sox Roster Moves

Along with Moran, Catcher Ali Sanchez is also getting the call-up to the big leagues. He has played 46 games in MLB with four different clubs, including the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, Miami Marlins, and Toronto Blue Jays. He will be a backup catcher, and most likely won’t play a major role with the Red Sox, but it’s nice to have players who can provide good depth.

As for players going down, the Red Sox have optioned Shortstop David Hamilton and Pitcher Chris Murphy down to the minor leagues. Murphy appeared in 14 games as a reliever and pitched to a very nice 3.05 ERA. David Hamilton was a bench player who had a .492 OPS in 69 games played with Boston this season. For the final Boston Red Sox roster move, they designated Nick Burdy for assignment.

Final Thoughts

Red Sox writer Chris Cotillo said that Boston plans on carrying three catchers for their series in Houston. Overall, it will be interesting to see what Moran can bring to this Red Sox team. It is a little puzzling as to why they optioned Murphy, as he’s been very solid out of the Red Sox bullpen. Boston plays the Astros later tonight at 8:10 PM EST. Maybe the Boston Red Sox roster needs to be shaken up.
