'Just Out There for the Boys;' Milwaukee Brewers Pitcher Is Exhausted, but Refuses to Quit for His Teammates

The Milwaukee Brewers improved to 27-28 on the season after winning their second straight game on Monday afternoon. A leadoff home run by Jackson Chourio in the bottom of the first inning, along with a solid (but short) start by Chad Patrick set the tone early as Milwaukee was able to hold off the Boston Red Sox in the ninth inning and come away with a 3-2 win.

Patrick needed 79 pitches to get through 4.2 innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out six. He was removed in the bottom of the fifth inning in favor of DL Hall, who was activated from the 60-day injured list earlier in day. Hall allowed one run in 2.1 innings, but his being available proved to be invaluable to Milwaukee’s beleaguered bullpen.

Abner Uribe pitched a scoreless eighth, and Trevor Megill locked down the save despite allowing one run in the ninth.

It is no secret that the Brewers bullpen has been going through it lately. With their starters unable to pitch deep into ballgames, Milwaukee has had to rely on their high-leverage relievers quite frequently. Pitchers like Nick Mears, Uribe, Jared Koenig, and Megill have thrown a lot of pitches while pitching with very few days, if any, of rest in between their outings.

And, at least for Megill, that is okay. After the game, he told Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that, while he is tired, he is happy to do whatever he can to help his team win:

It is rather humorous that Megill did not realize how many pitches that he threw as he closed out the Red Sox. As he states, his workload has been increased as of late, but the team has needed him in order to win games.

Hopefully the Brewers can get out to a big lead tomorrow and give Megill and the rest of the back end of their bullpen a day off.
