Justin Verlander’s Brother Blasts Tigers Following Trade Deadline

Despite rumors that he’d potentially be dealt before the July 31 deadline, future Hall of Fame pitcher Justin Verlander stuck with the San Francisco Giants — and, somehow, he’s not the Verlander we’re talking about in the deadline’s immediate aftermath.

Baseball fans active on social media have likely come across Ben Verlander, Justin’s brother, in recent years. Amid a flood of posts analyzing Thursday’s rash of trades, the younger Verlander turned heads when evaluating his brother’s former team’s deadline performance.

“The Detroit Tigers needed offense and didn’t get offense,” Verlander wrote on Twitter/X. “That will hurt them in the end.”

Detroit revamped its bullpen this week, adding Washington Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan and ex-Atlanta Braves reliever Rafael Montero. The Tigers also acquired Baltimore Orioles pitcher Charlie Morton, who is 7-1 with a 3.88 ERA in his last 11 starts.

However, the Tigers did not add a bat as many predicted they would. Detroit missed an opportunity to reunite with Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez, who instead landed with the Seattle Mariners; Suárez signed with the Tigers out of Venezuela and debuted with Detroit in 2014.

Verlander, who played in the Tigers’ farm system from 2014-17, went one step further.

“They are trade deadline losers,” he commented.

It’s always odd seeing Ben Verlander comment on the Tigers, given his brother’s legacy in Detroit. Justin posted 56.6 bWAR, won a Cy Young and an MVP, and reached six All-Star Games over 13 seasons with the Tigers.

Then again, Justin hasn’t pitched for the Tigers in nearly a decade, so we don’t imagine he or those running the organization really care what Ben thinks.

Either way, we know that one Verlander doesn’t approve of Detroit’s recent moves. We wonder how the other Verlander feels, especially considering that he’s stuck on a 54-55 Giants team riding a six-game losing streak.
