Keith Hernandez Caught Ripping Mets on Hot Mic During Broadcast

The New York Mets' bats awoke on Wednesday to defeat the Miami Marlins 6-5 in the 11th inning and seize the series with it.

It wasn't pretty, however.

The Mets were four outs away from losing to the lowly Marlins until Pete Alonso sent a three-run blast to tie the ball game 4-4.

New York's lackluster offense in its opening series against the Houston Astros cost them, leading to a 3-3 record after its first two series.

Mets announcer Keith Hernandez has taken note.

The Mets legend was caught on the hot mic criticizing the Mets offense when SNY was returning from a commercial break on Wednesday.

"Piss-poor hitting," Hernandez said with disgust.

Hernandez' slip came at the top of the 11th inning after both sides failed to put up runs in the first extra frame.

The Mets scored the go-ahead run on a walk with the bases loaded and tacked on the eventual game-winner by way of a force out on Mark Vientos' infield grounder.

“Crazy game,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said to the New York Post. “We didn’t play well early. I am just glad we found a way to get the job done and won the series and now we get to go home and play in front of our fans.”

After a 2024 season where the Mets excelled with clutch hitting, the Mets have work to do in reestablishing themselves. Alonso's home run showed some of that still exists, but per FanGraphs, the Mets currently rank No. 21 overall in weighted runs created-plus through six games, a metric that measures offensive value adjusted to ballparks and other external factors.

“There’s a lot of guys here from last year and we know how to do that,” Alonso said. “This is a talented bunch. We never think we’re out of any game. That’s just a testament to every single one of these guys.
