Kris Bryant's future with the Chicago Cubs is uncertain. Because of that, he really thought he was traded to the New York Mets at one point this winter.
The Cubs third baseman told reporters on Thursday that he received a text from an unknown Connecticut number that said: "Welcome to the Mets."
Bryant has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason, so the text message was a bit unsettling for the 29-year-old. However, it didn't take long for the situation to be sorted out. Bryant's agent, Scott Boras, contacted Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer, who said it was not true.
The three-time All-Star is entering the final year of his contract with the Cubs. With no extension, this could end up being his final season with the franchise.
Bryant has spent his entire career in Chicago, helping the Cubs capture a World Series title in 2016, the same year he was named MVP. Through six seasons, he slashed .280/.380/.508 with 142 home runs and 414 RBI.
