The Philadelphia Phillies made a significant move during the 2022 MLB offseason, signing star slugger Kyle Schwarber to a four-year, $79 million contract. This was after Schwarber had 32 home runs, 71 RBIs, and a .266 batting average in 113 games split between the Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox in 2021.
The decision to sign Schwarber has undoubtedly paid off big time for the Phillies. He has provided them with incredible offense, posting 131 home runs and 302 RBIs in 465 games over three seasons. This includes 38 home runs, 104 RBIs, and a .248 batting average last season.
With Schwarber having great success with Philadelphia and entering the final season of his contract, fans have naturally wondered if a contract extension could be in his future. While speaking to The Athletic's Matt Gelb, Schwarber made it clear that he is interested in signing an extension with the Phillies.
"I know there’s interest on our side,” Schwarber said. "We’ll see what happens throughout this camp — if they approach us and we get deeper and deeper into discussions. I’ve always enjoyed my time here.”
Given how well Schwarber has played for the Phillies, it would be understandable if they were interested in keeping him around, too. He has elite power, so keeping him around would be major for the Phillies. We will need to wait and see if the Phillies and Schwarber can work out an extension, but it's clear that the two-time All-Star wants one.
