Latest report on Grant Holmes’ injury

The 2025 season is the gift that keeps on giving if you’re in Braves Country. If it weren’t enough to watch a pathetic product every single night, the baseball gods continue to rub salt in the wound, the latest being a Grant Holmes injury.

The reliever-turned-starter has been one of the few bright spots of an otherwise dismal campaign, giving the Braves rotation some stability in the wake of Spencer Strider’s return from InternalBrace surgery and the injuries to Reynaldo Lopez, Chris Sale, Spencer Schwellenbach, and A.J. Smith-Shawver.

Holmes has a sub-4.00 ERA, which puts him slightly above average compared to the rest of the league, more than enough for an arm who was only supposed to be a back-of-the-rotation piece. Unfortunately, like everyone else from the Opening Day starting rotation, Holmes will head to the 60-day injured list, and the Braves’ worst fears have been realized.

According to Mark Bowman, Grant Holmes is debating his options between either Tommy John surgery or InternalBrace surgery.

The two routes for Grant Holmes will dictate when he’s likely to return to the field. Spencer Strider recently underwent InternalBrace surgery, which has become an increasingly popular alternative to the traditional Tommy John surgery because it’s a quicker turnaround. Strider was able to pitch off the mound around 9 months after his procedure and was back pitching for the Braves in a year. Tommy John surgery will keep Holmes out until the 2027 season.

This news is not only devastating for Grant Holmes, who spent a decade in the minor leagues before finally catching on with the Braves’ bullpen last year, but also the club’s hopes of competing in 2026.

The Braves have yet another hole to fill, and it’s become increasingly clear that Alex Anthopoulos has quite a bit of work to do this offseason.
