Left-handed pitchers had a day to remember on Thursday, April 17, 2025. The southpaws went 5-0 with a 1.48 ERA yesterday. It was the first time left-handed pitchers went 5-0 or better with a sub-1.50 ERA since August 10, 1981.
Pirates Starting Pitcher Andrew Heaney tossed 7.1 scoreless innings, Diamondbacks Starting Pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez surrendered 1 earned run over 5.1 innings of work. Athletics Starting Pitcher JP Sears kept it going with 6 scoreless innings, New York Yankees Relief Pitcher Tim Hill tossed 2 scoreless innings to secure the win, and Phillies Starting Pitcher Christopher Sanchez struck out a career-high 12 and surrendered two earned runs over 7 frames. How will these pitchers fare the next time they toe the slab?

Heaney has gotten off to a strong start this season. He is 1-1 with a 2.13 ERA. He is 15th in ERA and 18th in WHIP. Rodriguez hopes Thursday’s start will get his season on track. He had a 6.10 ERA through 2 starts and is trying to recover. Rodriguez has still been a strikeout maven this year.
Sears is a stellar 2-2 with a 3.13 ERA. He has been one of the bright spots for an Athletics pitching staff that has struggled. Hill has stabilized a Yankees pitching staff that is injury-riddled. Sanchez put forth a career day to help the Phillies defeat the San Francisco Giants. He is 2-0 with a 2.96 ERA. A career-best strikeout today catapulted him to fourth in the league in that department.
These left-handed pitchers will look to keep pitching this way when on the mound again. The southpaws going tonight will have lofty shoes to fill. They will give it all they have to keep the momentum going.
