The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Jose Hernandez from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for cash considerations. Ryan Brasier was transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to make room on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.

Hernandez is the second player to join the Dodgers in as many days. On Wednesday they acquired Cavan Biggio from the Toronto Blue Jays.

Like Biggio, Hernandez became available after getting designated for assignment. He was among the corresponding roster moves to the Pirates claiming Dennis Santana off waivers from the New York Yankees. Santana began his career with the Dodgers organization before being traded to the Texas Rangers.

The trade represents a bit of a homecoming for Hernandez, who originally signed with the Dodgers in 2016 out of the Dominican Republic. He remained part of the organization until getting selected by the Pirates in the 2022 Rule 5 Draft.

Hernandez made the Pirates’ Opening Day roster and MLB debut last year. He went 1-3 with two blown saves, a 4.97 ERA and 1.36 WHIP across 50 relief appearances.

Hernandez began the 2024 season with the Pirates but frequently was optioned and recalled. He appeared in just seven games prior to the trade, going 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA and 1.69 WHIP.

The 26-year-old last pitched for the Pirates on May 23.

Jose Hernandez’s Minor League stats

Over parts of seven seasons in the Minors, Hernandez is a career 17-10 with a 3.65 ERA and 258 strikeouts in 226.2 innings pitched. Included in that was pitching to a 7.04 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 14 appearances for Triple-A Indianapolis this year.

Hernandez has three Minor League option years remaining, which affords the Dodgers some flexibility should he be added to their active roster at some point.
