Luis Gil Wins American League Rookie Of The Year, Austin Wells Finishes Third
USA TODAY Sports

Luis Gil was named the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year on Monday.

MLB began its award announcements on Monday. The New York Yankees’ starter was named the winner of the AL Rookie of the Year after a solid regular season.

Gil went 15-7 in 29 starts during the year. He struck out 171 batters while posting a 3.50 ERA in 151.2 innings pitched. The righty’s biggest flaw during the year was his ability to keep the base paths clean. The rookie led MLB with 77 walks.

Gil earned a spot in the starting rotation after Gerrit Cole went down with an injury in Spring Training. An injury to Clarke Schmidt in late May kept a rotation spot open for Gil as he continued to impress throughout the season. The rookie even earned multiple starts in the postseason for the Bronx Bombers as well.

Gil earned 15 of the 30 first-place votes for the award. He also earned 10 second-place votes and one third-place vote. Gil finished with 106 points from votes, five more points than Colton Cowser of the Baltimore Orioles.

Gil’s battery mate finished third in the Rookie of the Year voting. Austin Wells had 17 points, earning three second-place votes and eight third-place votes.

Gil is the first Yankee since Aaron Judge in 2017 to take home the Rookie of the Year award. He is the first pitcher in franchise history since Dave Righetti in 1981 to earn the honor as well.

Paul Skenes was the winner of the National League Winner Rookie of the Year award this year.
