Making Aaron Judge captain not enough for him to re-sign with Yankees?

New York Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay doesn't know if making Aaron Judge captain is enough to entice the slugger to re-sign with the Bronx Bombers. 

"I don’t know if that’s going to let him leave $30 million on the table from another team," Kay explained about the topic on Monday during a segment that aired on the YES Network, per Mike Rosenstein of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "I just think that if they do sign him to a long-term deal, he’s the obvious choice to be the captain. He’s home-grown. He’s certainly assumed that role in the clubhouse. The players respect him to an unbelievable degree. I think that’s a natural, but I don’t think it’s enough of a hook to just make up for another year or tens of millions of dollars." 

The subject arose after Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner told Meredith Marakovits of the YES Network that naming Judge captain "is something we would consider" if the outfielder re-signed with the team, according to Bryan Hoch of the MLB's website. Steinbrenner also said he's had "very positive conversations" with Judge "since the season ended" but responded that one would "have to ask him" if being captain of the Yankees is important to the 30-year-old. 

The Yankees haven't officially had a captain since Hall of Famer Derek Jeter retired following the 2014 campaign.

Starting pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. went so far as to name Judge "our captain" for next season even before the Yankees were swept by the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series last month. That was also before Judge, who rejected New York's seven-year, $213.5 million contract extension offer ahead of the season, hit free agency and became eligible to speak with other clubs last week. 

Multiple insiders insist the Yankees remain the favorites to obtain the signature of the four-time All-Star selection even as the Linden, California, native continues to be linked in rumors with the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, and other potential suitors. 

"I have made it clear to him that [remaining with the Yankees] is our wish," Steinbrenner said to Marakovits. "He means a lot to this organization, and if there’s room, we’re going to do everything we can to make that happen."
