Manager Terry Francona to miss Indians' series vs. Twins

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona will miss at least one more series this month.

The club confirmed on Monday that Francona won't be in the Progressive Field dugout for a three-game showdown with division foes the Minnesota Twins that begins Monday evening.

His status for a weekend series at the St. Louis Cardinals was unknown as of Monday afternoon.

Francona missed eight consecutive games from Aug. 2 through Aug. 9 due to a gastrointestinal condition similar to one that bothered him in March before the league halted the season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 61-year-old returned on Aug. 11 but then stayed home for a three-game tilt against the Pittsburgh Pirates last week.

Cleveland confirmed that Francona underwent a medical procedure on Friday that left him unable to manage over the weekend when the Tribe lost two of three to the Detroit Tigers.

It's believed Francona's issues aren't related to COVID-19.

As has been the case throughout Francona's absence, former Indians catcher and current first base coach Sandy Alomar Jr. will serve as interim manager for the club until further notice.

Francona is a two-time American League Manager of the Year who guided the Boston Red Sox to World Series championships in 2004 and 2007.
