Marcelo Mayer Breaks Silence on Major Red Sox Decision Amid Alex Bregman's Future Return

When Alex Bregman returns for the Boston Red Sox, there will have to be some difficult decisions made. With Marcelo Mayer, Trevor Story, and others, just to name a few, the Red Sox will have to figure out what they want to do in the infield.

However, guaranteeing Mayer daily at-bats has to be in the plans, as this needs to be a season for the Red Sox to develop their young Stars.

But for Mayer, that'll likely come with a position change. He's already playing third base due to Story at shortstop, his natural position. When speaking to reporters about the potential issue, however, Mayer stated that he's fine with whatever comes, and that he values having defensive versatility.

“It helps a lot,” Mayer said, per NESN.

“Obviously, when Alex comes back, who knows what's going to happen, but like I said before, I’m willing to play anywhere in the field. I'm going to give my 100 percent (wherever) they want me to play.”

Mayer hasn't exactly gotten off to the hottest start in his Major League Baseball career, but that isn't much of a surprise. No matter how talented a prospect is, it's nearly impossible for them to come up and figure things out instantly.

He has four home runs in 77 at-bats, which is a good sign, but his .208 batting average can certainly improve.

Perhaps more worrisome than anything, he only has six walks compared to 26 strikeouts.

Hopefully, he’ll figure it out, but this is the toughest game in the world for a reason.
