Mariners bump Rangers out of first place
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Julio Rodriguez hit his first home run of the season and Logan Gilbert pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings as the Seattle Mariners moved into first place in the American League West with a 4-0 victory against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night in Arlington, Texas.

Cal Raleigh also went deep for Seattle, which won for the sixth time in its past seven games to nudge a half-game ahead of the defending World Series champion Rangers. The Mariners also won at Globe Life Field for the first time since 2022 after going winless in six games there last season.

Gilbert (2-0) allowed just two hits, a two-out double to left field by Josh Smith in the fourth inning and a leadoff double by Nathaniel Lowe in the seventh. Gilbert, a right-hander, walked four and struck out six.

Mariners reliever Ryne Stanek got Leody Taveras to ground out with two runners on for the final out in the seventh, Gabe Speier fanned two in a 1-2-3 eighth and Andres Munoz got a game-ending double play in the ninth after Lowe had singled with one out.

Rangers right-hander Dane Dunning (2-2) took the loss. He gave up four runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings, with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Raleigh hit his team-leading sixth homer of the season in the first inning, a two-run shot to right field on an 0-2 fastball. Raleigh's fourth homer in the past five games also scored J.P. Crawford, who had led off with a double.

Rodriguez hit a 435-foot blast into the second deck in left-center field with one out in third on a 1-0 sinker to double Seattle's lead to 4-0. Josh Rojas, who had led off the inning with a double, also scored.

It was the opener of a nine-game homestand for the Rangers, who went 5-5 on their just-completed 10-game trip to Houston, Detroit and Atlanta.

Seattle Mariners Could See Key Contributor Return From Injury Earlier Than Expected

Speaking before Thursday's series opener with the Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto provided some excellent news on Victor Robles and his potential return to the field, saying that he could be back on the major league roster earlier in September than originally thought. The following transcript comes from Seattle Sports 710: "...in the last two days we were informed that if all goes well, Vic has the potential of getting on our roster at some point in September, maybe more early than late. “Obviously we don’t have the ability to get through any setback, there’s not enough time left on the calendar. But right now he’s working his tail off. It’s trending in the right direction.” This is obviously great news for the Mariners, who have missed Robles at the top of the order, and on the bases. He's been out since early April with a fracture in his left shoulder. We have seen videos of him swinging on the field in just the last few days, which is a major step. The ROOT Sports telecast reported that he was practicing modified diving on Thursday, presumably as a way to test range of motion. While it's hard to count on anything from Robles at this point, his return would be a welcome one for a roster that needs another right-handed hitting option in the outfield. In a perfect world, he would be able to platoon with Dominic Canzone or Luke Raley in right field. Robles was hitting .273 in the early going for Seattle. He stole 30 bases in 77 games last season and is a spark plug at the top of the lineup. The M's have utilized J.P. Crawford in the leadoff spot in his absence for most of the year, but Randy Arozarena assumed the leadoff spot in Thursday's 6-0 win. The Mariners are 58-52 and in sole possession of the third and final wild card spot.

Report: Knicks made a signing based on Giannis Antetokounmpo trade belief

The New York Knicks aren't waiting for the offseason drama surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks to end before taking care of a key signing for their roster this summer. Per Shams Charania of ESPN, the Knicks signed Mikal Bridges to a four-year deal worth $150M on Thursday. "New York Knicks forward Mikal Bridges has agreed to a four-year, $150 million contract extension with the franchise, agents Sam Goldfeder and Jordan Gertler of Excel Sports Management tell ESPN," Charania posted on X. "The new deal includes a player option for 2029-30 and a trade kicker." Bridges' extension might not have happened if the Knicks believed they had a serious shot to land an elite player in a trade this summer. Per Ashish Mathur of Hoops Wire, the Knicks made their decision to sign Bridges to a new deal after they learned Antetokounmpo plans to stay in Milwaukee. "The New York Knicks got intel that Giannis Antetokounmpo won’t request a trade from the Milwaukee Bucks before signing Mikal Bridges to an extension, an NBA source told Hoops Wire on Thursday," Mathur wrote. "...The Knicks would have pursued Giannis Antetokounmpo had the two-time MVP requested a trade from the Bucks. All signs point toward Antetokounmpo remaining in Milwaukee." Due to the player option Bridges has in his new deal, the guard cannot be traded for at least six months. Mathur's report signals the reality that New York wants to land another star to pair with Jalen Brunson. However, the Knicks might not make a big splash until the trade deadline next year. The Knicks need a big man who can score and play defense at a high level in the playoffs, something Karl-Anthony Towns was unable to do in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Lakers reportedly monitoring two-time All-Star's availability

The Los Angeles Lakers finished last season with a dud after propelling to the third seed of the Western Conference, losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs. The one thing that the Wolves exposed was the Lakers' lack of an inside presence. The center spot was weak once they traded Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic midway through the season, but they found a way to manage despite putrid numbers coming from the center position. The Lakers were bottom five in both rebounds and points per game for centers during the regular season after the All-Star break. However, in the postseason, the numbers got worse. They tried to use their original starting center, Jaxson Hayes, to man the paint, but he only played 7.8 minutes per game while only scoring 1.8 points and grabbing two rebounds per contest. This team knows it needs extreme levels of help for the center spot, which is why it is reportedly looking at a former All-Star center's situation. Anthony Irwin of ClutchPoints reported that the Lakers are closely monitoring the situation between Nikola Vucevic and the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls have shipped out several key players over the last year, with Vucevic being the lone former All-Star still on the roster. As his trade market winds down, some have speculated that a potential buyout is on the horizon. However, Chicago Bulls insider K.C. Johnson reported on "The Fastbreak" podcast that the Bulls have no intentions of a buyout and would like to move him for assets at the trade deadline. Vucevic would be a massive upgrade alongside Deandre Ayton, whom the Lakers signed earlier in the offseason. Vucevic put up very impressive numbers last season, averaging 18.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game while shooting 53% from the field in 73 games. His career numbers are just as impressive, and he's a former two-time All-Star as well. The Lakers should continue to monitor Vucevic and assess the Bulls' ultimate plan for him. With Ayton already in the fold, a trade for Vucevic could put them at the top of the Western Conference.

Giants HC Brian Daboll punishes players after 'weird' practice

Brian Daboll threw in a different kind of punishment on Thursday after the New York Giants had a practice filled with unacceptable penalties. Per Dan Duggan of The Athletic, the fourth-year head coach was frustrated with the team committing several pre-snap penalties during Thursday's practice at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. "It was sort of a weird Thursday of practice at New York Giants camp," Duggan wrote. "It was crisp in the sense that the ball didn't hit the ground much in the passing game, but it was sloppy in the sense that there were at least six pre-snap penalties incurred by both units on all levels of the depth chart. "The pre-snap penalties led to coach Brian Daboll's first mandated sprints of camp (although they were just four 10-yard sprints). The players then instituted gassers after practice in response to the sloppy session." Duggan also noted rookie QB Jaxson Dart committed a delay-of-game penalty during his final drive of the day. While the punishment handed out by Daboll was unusual, the reason for the gassers is something New York saw a lot of last season. Per The Football Database, the Giants were tied with the New York Jets for committing the most delay of game penalties with 10 in 2024. They were tied with the Cleveland Browns for committing the most false starts with 26 and had the seventh-most offsides calls against them with seven. Some pre-snap penalties are to be expected early in training camp as the Giants are working with new quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Dart. However, New York needs to get its pre-snap routine and cadence figured out in training camp before it becomes a problem again in the regular season.
