Mariners interested in Reds utility player Spencer Steer

The Seattle Mariners are targeting Cincinnati Reds utility player Spencer Steer, according to Adam Jude of The Seattle Times. Steer fits well with the Mariners' needs for a clutch hitter who is also capable of providing versatility at several different positions, such as first base, left field and third base.

The 28-year-old fits well with the Mariners' need for an offensive boost, and while he's only batting .242 this season, he does have 16 home runs with 40 RBI and a 103 OPS+.

The Mariners remain in second place in the AL West and are only 0.5 behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West. They also sit two games out of the AL wild-card race and are pushing to be contenders this season.

Steer could be the missing puzzle piece that could help increase the stakes in the Mariners' hunt to clinch the postseason for a second consecutive season.

Why Spencer Steer is a suitable fit for the Mariners

The Mariners have already recently announced that they are open to trading starting pitcher Emerson Hancock and are looking to add a right-handed bat.

Seattle has had its struggles when it comes to facing left-handed pitchers, and Steer is boasting a dominant 1.062 OPS against them, which would position him as a solid platoon option for them.

Steer is also under team control through 2029, which means he would remain a core addition rather than being a short-term rental player. Since 2023, he has also showcased his reliability by hitting 20 or more home runs per season, which would equip the Mariners with a stable power bat in the midst of an AL wild-card race that is down to the wire.

Lastly, Steer's defensive versatility makes him an appealing option, as it would provide the Mariners with flexibility when creating lineups and addressing injuries.
