Mariners Lose Key Reliever to IL Again

The Seattle Mariners have lost one of their key relief pitchers to the injured list.

For the second time this season, the Mariners placed right-hander Matt Brash on the 15-day IL with a right lat strain (retroactive to June 9).

Brash missed three weeks in May with right lat inflammation, so it's concerning that he now has a right lat strain that forced him back onto the shelf.

In addition to putting Brash on the IL, the Mariners optioned infielder Ryan Bliss to Triple-A Tacoma and designated Yosver Zulueta for assignment. Seattle has recalled righty Domingo Gonzalez from Triple-A and reinstated infielder/outfielder Miles Mastrobuoni from the 60-day IL.

But the biggest loss here is Brash. The righty has posted a 3-0 record, 0.54 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 20 appearances and 16.2 innings this season. However, he will likely miss significant time now with his recurring lat issue.

The Mariners hold the fifth-best bullpen ERA in baseball at 3.20. But without Brash they will be missing a key piece of their relief corps.

Brash was forced to miss time last season as well due to a right UCL sprain. In 53 appearances in 2025, Brash posted a 2.47 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 58 strikeouts across 47.1 innings of work.

He has been a highly reliable reliever for the Mariners since making his MLB debut back in 2022. Brash did not make an appearance in the 2024 season as a result of undergoing Tommy John surgery.

The Mariners enter play on Wednesday in first place in the American League West division with a 36-32 record. They currently hold a three game lead over the Texas Rangers. Both teams have won seven of their last 10 games.

Seattle is coming off their best season in franchise history in 2025, where they won the AL West and made it all the way to Game 7 of the ALCS.
