Marlins DFA former All-Star

The Miami Marlins are pulling the plug on a former All-Star.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported on Tuesday that the Marlins are designating outfielder Avisail Garcia for assignment. Passan notes that Garcia is in the third year of a four-year, $53 million deal and the Marlins will be eating nearly $24 million as a result of the move.

Garcia, 32, was an All-Star with the Chicago White Sox in 2017. Known for his power, he topped out at 29 homers and 86 RBI with the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2021 season. But he is also known for his very high chase rate (with 1,038 strikeouts in 1,104 career games) and an inability to stay healthy in Miami. Garcia played in 98 games in 2022, 37 games in 2023 and just 18 games so far in 2024. He has not played at all since April due to a hamstring strain and also battled back and wrist issues over the last year or so.

The Marlins, meanwhile, are the worst team in the NL this season at 21-39. They have already sold off some quality pieces and are now doing more trimming by DFA’ing Garcia, who could still conceivably draw light interest as a waiver option.
