Marlins Reportedly DFA Former Red Sox Hurler After Short Stint In Organization
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

One former member of the Boston Red Sox reportedly is looking for a new home despite recently landing with the Miami Marlins.

Former Red Sox reliever Kaleb Ort was placed on waivers by the club toward the end of the 2023 campaign and was claimed by the Seattle Mariners.

He didn't spend much time in the Mariners' organization as Miami claimed him off waivers in December. He now likely will be looking for his next home after reportedly being designated for assignment by the Marlins on Wednesday, according to the Miami Herald's Jordan McPherson.

"Per source, Marlins are acquiring pitcher Declan Cronin off waivers from the (Houston Astros)," McPherson said. "Kaleb Ort is being DFA’d in a corresponding roster move to open up a 40-man spot."

Ort began his professional career in the New York Yankees' farm system but didn't make his big league debut until joining the Red Sox. Boston selected Ort from the Yankees in the 2020 Rule-5 Draft and eventually made his big league debut in 2021.

The righty bounced back and forth between the big leagues and minors over the last three seasons and appeared in 47 overall games with Boston in the majors. Over that stretch, he compiled a 6.26 ERA and 51-to-25 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 51 2/3 innings pitched.

Ort now likely will be looking for his next opportunity after being designated for assignment by the Marlins. Other clubs will have a chance to place a waiver claim on him. If no team claims him, he could enter free agency.
