Major League Baseball isn’t exactly known for timing when it comes to announcing awards. Just one day after one of the most incredible World Series in recent memory — and right in the middle of an NFL Sunday — the league decided to announce its Gold Glove winners.
The Braves had two finalists for the award: Nick Allen at shortstop and Matt Olson at first base. Allen was always going to be a long shot, given he doesn’t exactly have name recognition and was replaced by Ha-Seong Kim as a starter over the final month of the season, but Olson did win the award, the third Gold Glove of his career.

The sting of losing Freddie Freeman may never fully fade — especially while he’s hitting walk-off homers in the World Series for the Dodgers — but Matt Olson has been nothing short of spectacular for the Braves. He hasn’t missed a game in four seasons, has made two All-Star teams, recorded multiple 6+ WAR campaigns, broke the franchise record for home runs in a single season, and now has another Gold Glove to his name.
Other aspects of the Freeman debacle will be debated for decades, but what cannot be argued is just how damn good Olson has been for the Braves — and at just 31-years-old, there’s a lot more to his story in Atlanta left to tell.
