The Toronto Blue Jays dropped their third straight game, getting swept by the Philadelphia Phillies—capped off by Sunday’s 11-4 loss on the road. The weekend losses dropped Toronto to third in the American League East, with a 38-33 record, 1.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in second place. However, despite the recent string of losses, the Blue Jays still boast a 16-9 record over their last 25 games.
Toronto has been without veteran ace Max Scherzer, who signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal in January. He exited his March 29 debut with a right thumb inflammation and has remained sidelined since, as the club has deliberately managed his recovery.
While Scherzer has continued to work his way back into the Majors, the Blue Jays provided an update on the progress he’s made so far: according to SportNet's Ben Nicholson‑Smith, the plan is for Scherzer to start for Triple-A Buffalo Wednesday night.
If that goes well, he could rejoin the Blue Jays rotation as soon as next week.

Scherzer’s return would significantly bolster Toronto’s pitching depth. The three-time Cy Young Award winner brings a career 215‑112 record, 3.16 ERA, and 3,408 strikeouts over 18 MLB seasons. His presence would alleviate pressure on the bullpen and provide veteran experience as Toronto continues to make a playoff push.
The timing couldn't be better as the Blue Jays begin a six-game homestand on Tuesday. If he returns healthy during the week as anticipated, it could reset the rotation’s stability and inject confidence heading into the hot summer months.
