Max Scherzer could return to Mets rotation Sunday vs. Marlins

Coming off of a strong rehab start with the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Tuesday night, three-time Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer may be making his way back to a major league diamond this weekend. Scherzer finished his outing Tuesday with two runs allowed over 3 1/3 innings pitched and racked up six strikeouts.

The New York Mets' marquee offseason acquisition has been sidelined for over a month with an oblique strain. Scherzer is 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA and 0.95 WHIP through 49 2/3 innings pitched covering eight starts in 2022.

The righty told reporters last week that he was about "90%" recovered from his oblique injury and later, he threw a three-inning, 50-pitch simulated game at Citi Field.

Scherzer signed a three-year, $130 million contract with the Mets in December 2021.
