Max Scherzer Sends Uncertain Message After Major Blue Jays News

After two consecutive losses, the Toronto Blue Jays reminded the baseball world who they are with Saturday's 7-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. Stars Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went deep, and starting pitcher Jose Berrios allowed one unearned run on two hits in 7.2 innings.

The Blue Jays own the AL's second Wild Card spot despite future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer (thumb) pitching just one game this season. The 40-year-old exited after three innings against the Baltimore Orioles on March 29, and he's been rehabbing ever since.

Scherzer confirmed when he will return before Sunday's White Sox rematch, via MLB TV's Hazel Mae.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner said that he'll pitch on Wednesday against the Cleveland Guardians.

"My stuff is fine," he said. "I'm trying everything I can to manage this (thumb) and make sure I can recover...There's no knowing, just have to get out there."

Scherzer hasn't played a full season since 2023, when he went 13-6 with a 3.77 ERA over 27 combined starts with the New York Mets and Texas Rangers. The right-hander made three playoff starts for the latter club in its first-ever championship campaign.

Scherzer made just nine starts for the Rangers last year before signing a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays this past offseason.

Right-handed pitcher Chris Bassitt (7-3, 3.75 ERA) will start for Toronto against Chicago right-hander Adrian Houser (2-2, 2.15 ERA) in Sunday's rubber match at the Rogers Centre. The game will start at 1:37 p.m. EST.
