McDonald's gets in on Mets-Grimace meme

McDonald’s isn’t missing their generational opportunity for free marketing.

Grimace, the lovable, purple, McNugget-shaped mascot for McDonald’s, has emerged over the last week as a stunning good-luck charm for the New York Mets. Back on June 12, the Mets invited Grimace, who was celebrating his birthday, to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Citi Field for that day’s game against the Miami Marlins.

The Mets won that game against the Marlins and also their next five games since. At the time of writing, they are now a perfect 6-0 ever since Grimace threw out the first pitch. That has led to a funny internet meme about the power of Grimace, the apparent savior of the Mets’ season.

On Monday, McDonald’s themselves got in on the meme. From their corporate account on X, McDonald’s posted a photo of Grimace wearing a Mets cap and said that they were excited to watch the team that night. When the Mets went on to defeat the defending MLB champion Texas Rangers 14-2, McDonald’s dubbed it “The Grimace Effect.”

The Mets had been in the toilet all season, but their Grimace-led hot streak now has them at a respectable 34-37 on the year (miraculously now just one game back of a wild-card spot in the NL). Even Mets fans are showing some outward love to Grimace right now, and it is fair to wonder whether the Mets’ large purple amulet will ever let them lose again.
