Mets Announce Francisco Alvarez News After Leaving Tigers Game

The New York Mets need more contributions from their 24-year-old catcher Francisco Alvarez. Now in his fifth season with the Mets, Alvarez has been inconsistent in 2026.

While his efforts in the batter’s box remain above-average for a catcher, New York has routinely chosen to place him at designated hitter just to keep his bat in the lineup.

Therefore, his .236 batting average, .315 on-base percentage, .696 OPS, four home runs and nine RBIs across 36 games is not the production New York is looking for, especially as they try to turn their season around. The Mets entered Tuesday’s series opener with the Detroit Tigers sitting 10 games under .500 at 15-25.

Alvarez collected one double and an RBI during his first two trips to the plate on Tuesday. He also scored the Mets go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Unfortunately, his night came to an abrupt end during his third at-bat. Alvarez appeared to injure himself, possibly his right leg, while swinging the bat in the bottom of the sixth inning. He did not finish the at-bat, leaving in the middle of it after a brief talk with manager Carlos Mendoza and trainers. Backup catcher Luis Torrens entered in his place.

Moments later, the Mets provided an update for Alvarez’s early exit. “Francisco Alvarez was removed from tonight's game with a right knee injury. He will undergo imaging tomorrow,” the Mets wrote on X.

If Alvarez is forced to head to the injured list, it would be a huge blow to a Mets offense that is already depleted. Even though Alvarez has not been elite this year, he is still a major upgrade over Torrens, who is known more for his defensive work.

Three everyday starters, Francisco Lindor, Luis Robert Jr. and Jorge Polanco, are all currently sidelined, so the lineup cannot afford any more injuries. With the Mets trying to avoid selling at the trade deadline, losing Alvarez for any length of time would make that challenge even steeper.
