New York Mets starting pitcher Jonah Tong is one of the top pitching prospects in all of Major League Baseball. Tong is ranked as the No. 48 overall and No. 7 right-handed pitcher prospect in baseball, along with the No. 3 prospect on the Mets.
Tong was taken in the seventh round of the 2022 MLB Draft by New York out of Bill Crothers Secondary School in Markham, Ontario, Canada.
The 22-year-old made his debut in the major leagues in 2025, making five starts for the Mets with a 2-3 record. In total, he threw 18 2/3 innings with a 7.71 ERA, striking out 22 batters while walking nine.
While Tong struggled during his time in the majors in 2025, he earned a shot with his incredible pitching in the minor leagues. Across 22 starts between Double-A and Triple-A last season, the 6-foot-1 right-hander had a 10-5 record with an unbelievable 1.43 ERA, totaling 179 strikeouts with 47 walks in 113 2/3 innings.
This spring training, Tong started with the major league squad and made just one start. In that game, he tossed 2 2/3 innings, surrendering three hits and three earned runs with two punch outs and one walk.
On Tuesday, the Mets announced on X that Tong was being optioned back to Triple-A.
"We have made the following roster move," the caption read.

This is disappointing news for Tong, as New York fans thought he had a chance of making the Mets' opening day roster.
While he will now start the 2026 season in Triple-A, there's no doubt that the top prospect will be back up with the big league club in no time.
