The New York Mets and New York Yankees are beginning their first Subway Series of the 2025 MLB season on Friday night. This three-game set will take place in the Bronx, where Yankees fans are prepared to rain down boos on superstar outfielder Juan Soto.
Helping lead the Yankees to an American League pennant last season, Soto left in free agency for the Mets. His 15-year, $765 million contract made MLB history, and subsequently intensified the already storied rivalry between the Mets and Yankees.
In the Mets’ most recent game, a 4-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, Soto was out of the lineup for the first time all season.
Unsurprisingly, manager Carlos Mendoza has made the move to reinsert Soto into the starting nine for Friday night’s series opener against the Yankees. He will be batting second and playing right field, slotted in his usual spot between Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso.

If there was any doubt, it has now been made official that Soto will face his former team for the first time since departing in free agency. To start his Mets tenure, Soto has appeared in 43 games, posting a 142 OPS+ in 157 at-bats.
The Mets enter this contest with a 28-16 record that has them atop the National League East. Similarly, the Yankees sit atop the American League East division with a 25-18 record.
The Subway Series is always highly-anticipated, but this year brings the most intrigue in quite some time.
