Mets Announce Move After Loss to Cardinals
© Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets lost 6-5 in the first game of their doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, largely due to a subpar starting pitching performance by right-hander Blake Tidwell. The 23-year-old allowed six runs on nine hits in just 3.2 innings and threw just 48 strikes out of 82 pitches in his first big-league appearance.

The Mets' (22-12) bullpen followed up with 5.2 shutout innings, but that wasn't enough to get a comeback victory. Star shortstop Francisco Lindor drove in three runs on a groundout and a single, while Brandon Nimmo hit a RBI double and Jesse Winker hit a sacrifice fly.

New York made a roster change after the loss, via the team's social media.

"RHP Dedniel Núñez has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse. RHP Blade Tidwell has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse," it announced.

Nuñez made 25 appearances as a rookie for the Mets last season, going 0-2 with a 2.31 ERA, nine holds, and one save.

New York drafted Tidwell No. 52 overall in 2022 and signed Nuñez as an international free agent in 2016.

Right-hander Tylor Megill (3-2, 1.74 ERA) is starting for the Mets against Cardinals (15-19) right-hander Andre Pallante (2-2, 4.13 ERA) on Sunday.

After that game, New York will face the Arizona Diamondbacks on the road before returning home to host the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates. After that, they'll go back on the road to play the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

The Mets are three games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East.
